Yes — carry a valid passport (EU nationals can use a national ID card). Since 15 July 2026, the Gibraltar-Spain land border has no checks, so you cross freely. But you still need valid ID, and checks apply at Gibraltar's airport and seaport if you arrive by air or sea.

What currency is used in Gibraltar?

Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound (GIP), pegged 1:1 to the British Pound Sterling (GBP). UK pounds are accepted everywhere. Euros are widely accepted in tourist areas but you may get a poor exchange rate. There is no VAT in Gibraltar.

Yes. Gibraltar is compact (6.7 km²) and most highlights — the Rock, St. Michael's Cave, Main Street shopping, Casemates Square, and Europa Point — can be seen in a single day. Plan for 6–8 hours. With the border now open (no checks since 15 July 2026), crossing takes seconds.

Is the Gibraltar Cable Car running?

No. The Gibraltar Cable Car is closed for a multi-year rebuild (expected to reopen in 2027). Alternative routes to the Upper Rock include taxis, tour buses, or hiking the Mediterranean Steps.
